Shingles

A shingle roof is one that has been covered with items that overlap one another. These items that lap over one another are called shingles and they are identified by their flat or curved rectangular shape. They are laid out or placed on a roof from the bottom of the roof’s edge in an upward pattern in which each consecutive row is set to overlap the row below it. The overlapping or interlocking creates a channel or pathway for conveying any moisture or accumulated water away from the roof. Shingles can be made of numerous materials and can be grouped into types.

TPO

TPO is a lightweight, puncture-resistant material. It has a laminated quality, meaning each side of the sheet has different material characteristics. The top side, the default white color, provides wear resistance, while the bottom, usually gray or a darker color, consists of the reinforced filler material. With its UV resistant and reflective properties, TPO is valued for its energy efficiency, providing reduced cooling costs and energy savings for facilities when temperatures are high. TPO is typically available in thicknesses of 45 mils, 60 mils, and 90 mils. It is relatively easy to install and can be mechanically attached or adhered to by glue or adhesive.

PVC

PVC roofing is a thermoplastic membrane made from an ethylene-chlorine polymer (known in laymen’s terms as vinyl or plastic). PVC is generally rigid and firm in its standard form, so plasticizers are added to make the PVC flexible enough for roofing applications. A polyester or fiberglass scrim is added to increase its tensile strength durability. PVC roofing comes in various colors and is particularly useful when the roof is regularly exposed to heat, chemicals, harsh weather elements, and high winds.

Modified Bit

Modified bitumen is an incredibly sturdy yet flexible asphalt membrane mixed with polymerized rubber or plastic and fiberglass reinforcement. It evolved from built-up roofing systems, which have been employed on low-slope roofs for over a century.

Mod bit is common in commercial, industrial, and residential applications and ideal for use on flat and low-slope roofs. Depending on the material type, these systems generally consist of two or more layers (multi-ply).

EPDM

EPDM is an extremely durable synthetic rubber roofing membrane  (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) widely used in low-slope buildings in the United States and worldwide. Its two primary ingredients, ethylene and propylene, are derived from oil and natural gas. EPDM is available in both black and white, and is sold a broad variety of widths, ranging from 7.5 feet to fifty feet, and in two thicknesses, 45 and 60 mils. EPDM can be installed either fully adhered, mechanically attached or ballasted.

Metal

A metal roof is simply a roofing system made using metal pieces, tiles, or panels. A metal roof is a part of the roofing envelope which is the physical separator between the inside and outside of the building and is designed to provide resistance to air, water, heat and sound. The roof also contributes to structural support and is a significant contributor to the overall aesthetic appearance of a building.

Coatings

Roof coatings are designed for protecting and extending the useful service life of roof assemblies for new construction and more commonly, existing roof coverings, such as BUR, metal, modified bitumen, single ply membranes, and spray polyurethane foam.

Roof coatings are thicker than paint and have a higher solids content. Roof coatings are formulated to protect roofs from the damaging effects of weather and the environment, such as UV light, and excessive water and wind. They are formulated to provide protection for many years and are also extremely elastic; they typically contain a high level of top-quality resin.

Gutters / Downspouts

Gutter systems are undeniably one of the most important parts to a structure when it comes to keeping your safe from water damage. Gutters direct water away from your home’s foundation, mitigating the risk of a flooded basement. They also prevent erosion to your siding and landscaping. While it is common knowledge that gutters are an essential component of any buildings exterior, how do you know which gutter system is right for you? To find out, take a look at our contact page for a free onsite visit and estimate for the appropriate type and size gutter system for your property.

Perimeter Metal

Perimeter edge metal is a critical component to a watertight roofing system. Perimeter edge metals close the gap, and transition a flat (horizontal) roof, to the standing walls of your building. They help retain the crushed stone of a ballasted roofing system, help keep water from overflowing, and curb ponding.
